Literary characters were brought to life at six Surrey schools, each a member of GLF Schools, as pupils and staff at Banstead Infants, The Vale (Epsom), Salfords, Hillcroft (Caterham), Cordwalles (Camberley), Pine Ridge & Lorraine (Camberley) celebrated the 25th anniversary of World Book Day. At Hillcroft Primary in Caterham, children have been enjoying a scavenger hunt in the library.
This followed the school's PTA - Friends of Hillcroft - hosting a 'costume swap' stall last week where children donated unwanted costumes that were sorted and sold on at a low cost to support with costumes for World Book Day and raise funds. The school also had a performing arts company visit this week to work with the children on role play, drama and confidence building as well as helping them to enable the children explore the joy of books and characters through drama. At Banstead Infants, children and staff were encouraged to wear their pyjamas today and #snuggleupwithagoodbook. There has also been a Masked Reader competition for the classes, with teachers as animals and distorted voices, which followed a special World Book Day assembly. Children have also been moving around classes to read with children from other year groups, and pupils are also enjoying a second-hand book swap. Meanwhile at Salfords, pupils have been enjoying a book week and swapping books in school, taking part in a sponsored read as well as Masked Reader fun. Families have also shared the children's extreme reading photos Claire Regnard, Co-Headteacher at Salfords, said: "Book Week is hugely important to our staff and pupils. It is a time where every member of our school community can get involved with reading and discussions about books. They love taking part in all the activities and bringing stories to life with their costumes."
