The new director of a West Sussex teaching hub has been working with the Department for Education to help shape the new landscape for professional training.
Angela Rodda has taken over as director at the West Sussex-based GLF Teaching School Hub (TSH) and says she is ‘excited about the new role the hubs have been given with the strategic role for Initial Teacher Training.’

Would-be cosmonauts enjoyed an out-of-this-world experience when they got to spend time with a real-life spaceman and hear an insider’s account of space travel.
Former NASA astronaut Charles ‘Sam’ Gemar visited St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Alnwick as part of a three-day space-themed Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) programme, which was organised by the school’s Science Lead, Donna Newton, and provided by Peter Longstaff of Starlight Education – a parent at the school whose company delivers STEM workshops across the world. Staff and students at Cuddington Croft Primary had reason to celebrate when the latest SAT results revealed that the school ranked within the Top 10 in the county.
The Department for Education Performance Table for Key Stage 2 2023 SAT results showed that the school – which is part of the GLF Schools Multi-Academies Trust – was among the 10 highest performers out of 476 Surrey schools, according to the combined percentage of children attaining the expected standard in Reading, Writing and Maths. Aspiring cooks were put through their culinary paces when the Royal Air Force visited Marshland High School.
A group of Year 10 students took part in a Ready Steady Cook style challenge set by members of the RAF Catering Team, which involved them working in teams to create a two-course meal from scratch against the clock. Four aspiring young writers have been picked from thousands to go through to the semi-final of a national story writing competition.
Thirty Year 6 pupils at St Alban’s Catholic Primary School in Walker took part in the BBC 500 Words contest, which required them to write a story of no more than 500 words, with marks awarded for characterisation, plot, originality and enjoyment. Talented young mathematicians answered thousands of questions correctly to win first place for their school in a national maths competition – for the second year running.
Over 600 Key Stage 3 students aged 11 to 14 at St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy took part in the annual 10ticks Mental Maths Competition, which was sponsored by Liontrust and required entrants to answer as many questions as possible correctly over a two-week period. Tasty reads were on the menu at a school in Ashington when pupils were served up a literary feast in an initiative designed to promote a love of reading.
The Book Tasting was a new venture for St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School, where 28 Year 3 children from Maple Class took part in the innovative event. Young musicians will have the chance to showcase their talent during two shows hosted by Springwood High School.
The first is a West Norfolk Academies Trust Vocal Evening on Thursday, February 1 from 6.30pm when a selection of soloists, duets and trios will take to the stage in the school’s recital room in front of an audience. Celebrations at the West Norfolk Academies Trust saw MP James Wild praise the hard work of everyone involved with its schools, which have all achieved a Good status from Ofsted.
