Talented young mathematicians answered thousands of questions correctly to win first place for their school in a national maths competition – for the second year running. Over 600 Key Stage 3 students aged 11 to 14 at St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy took part in the annual 10ticks Mental Maths Competition, which was sponsored by Liontrust and required entrants to answer as many questions as possible correctly over a two-week period. Students could log onto the 10ticks website from any device during the fortnight to tackle a wide range of maths problems.
More than 3,000 schools signed up for the challenge this year, with the primary and secondary schools that answered the most correct questions pronounced the winners in their respective categories. “We have taken part in the competition before, which was last year, and won,” said Angela Bond, who teaches maths at St Benet Biscop and helped to organise the event, with the assistance of department colleagues Karen Delf and Veronika Garry. “We received a glass trophy and engraved medals for 77 students who completed over 500 questions,” she continued. “Thirty-four students completed over 1,000, and four of those over 5,000 questions. The students really got behind the competition.” Each participant also received a certificate in recognition of their hard work, with presentations taking place in celebration assemblies at the school, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust. “These achievements are very important to St Benet Biscop, as we see it as our responsibility to nurture talents and watch them flourish,” added Miss Bond. “The competition had different formats to complete questions, and it allowed students to show their unique, hidden talents, which we believe should be recognised.”
