Celebration cake was very much the order of the day at a Horsham school which has become a member of one of the UK’s largest multi academy trusts. Greenway Junior School, Horsham, is the 42nd member of GLF Schools which was formed in Surrey ten years ago and has grown to include more than 2,000 staff and 17,000 children across its member schools. A Fenland student successfully answered the billionth question on a web-based education resource and was presented with a laptop to mark the milestone. Thomas Clarkson Academy, Wisbech, is also set to benefit as William Horspool, in Year 11, also won a school prize alongside his own Asus VivoBook and Beats headphones by correctly answering a science question on EduCake. Pupils campaigning to become head boy and girl at their primary school received some expert election advice when the local Member of Parliament visited their class. Ian Lavery, Labour MP for Wansbeck since 2010, spent an afternoon with the Year 6 children at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary in Ashington, as part of their studies on parliamentary democracy. A Norfolk student has won a prestigious art award, beating thousands of other applicants to take home a coveted prize. Izzy Holt, a sixth former at Springwood High School, entered the Holt Festival competition on the advice of her art teacher, and was thrilled to win the Sworders Young Artists prize, and £500 in prize money. Family cookery lessons for pupils and parents are being rolled out to a group of schools in the North East after initial classes proved to be a huge hit. The idea to help parents and carers learn how to cook from scratch while saving money was launched at St Wilfrid’s in Blyth, one of 39 schools in the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust. Da Vinci, Kadinsky and Picasso were among the inspirations of 400 aspiring young artists who showcased their talents to the public this week. The students from Gaywood Primary School displayed their artwork at the Beyond the Line Exhibition, which took place in the school hall from 3.15 to 6.15pm on Thursday and Friday and featured pieces in charcoal, acrylic, textiles and oil pastels. |
