Caring youngsters at a Newcastle school have been boosting the spirits of refugees and asylum seekers in the run up to Christmas.
The OLSA Voices group choir from Our Lady & St Anne’s Primary visited the St Vincent de Paul Centre yesterday to entertain service users at a Christmas meal.

A school opened its doors to members of the community when it hosted Christmas lunch yesterday – complete with festive entertainment.
St Aidan’s Primary in Ashington, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, invited parishioners to a traditional Christmas dinner at the school, cooked by its in-house catering team and accompanied by a performance from some of its pupils. Budding chefs at Smithdon High had the opportunity to showcase their culinary talents in a national cookery competition – with two making it through to the next stage. Seven Year 10 students from the Hunstanton high school, which is a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, entered the annual Rotary Young Chef Competition, which is open to secondary school students across the country aged 11 to 17. Christmas can be a challenging time, but youngsters at Our Lady & St Anne's Catholic Primary School have been helping to make it brighter for refugees and asylum seekers in the North East.
The children from the Newcastle primary school, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, have been working with volunteers at the Vincent de Paul Centre, which provides support for refugee and asylum-seeking families. It was Christmas at its most traditional when a group of West Norfolk schools came together to host a carol service for members of the community. The 11 schools, which are all members of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, joined forces to celebrate the season at the first WNAT Community Carol Service. Springwood students marked the festive season in traditional style when they staged the school's first-ever pantomime. The whole of Springwood High School, which is a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, took part in Jack and the Beanstalk, with two performances of the show both fully sold out. Our Lady & St Anne’s was recognised for its inclusivity and welcoming ethos earlier this year, when it became a School of Sanctuary, and has since been working with the St Vincent de Paul Centre, which supports homeless, refugee, and asylum-seeking families, and provides them with emergency food and clothing, English classes, support groups, and housing and benefits advice. There were Christmas biscuits, decorations, party games and even some elves when Gaywood Primary School celebrated the festive season. Children at the school, which is a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, swapped their uniforms for Christmas jumpers and spent the last day of term on Friday enjoying a host of Winter and Christmas-themed activities. Caring Smithdon students celebrated the end of term on Friday by raising over £330 for two children’s charities. Christmas Jumper Day at the Hunstanton high school, a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, saw students and staff members don an array of festive outfits and costumes, some of which had been customised by the wearers. Springwood students were 'Walking In The Air' after receiving standing ovations to their live orchestral performances of The Snowman on Saturday Musicians at the King's Lynn high school, which is a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, performed the soundtrack to the classic animation live in the school’s Peter Hopkin’s Hall in what was thought to be a first for West Norfolk. |
