A coven of witches, a Mad Hatter, and Cruella de Vil were some of the characters brought to life at Merstham Park School today. Staff dressed up as a range of literary characters from the Great Gatsby to the world of Roald Dahl, which has followed a variety of literary based activities throughout this week. Students at Merstham Park School, a member of GLF Schools, have been thinking this week about their own stories whilst also undertaking some maestro classes with author and comedian David Walliams.
Author Emma Carroll has spoken to Year 7 and 9 pupils on her book The Week at World's End, which is a story set in Britain in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, which explores family, friendship, courage and hope. Meanwhile Design and Technology students designed Roald Dahl inspired chocolate bars. Drama students have been watching examples of stage shows which are adaptations of novels. They then decided which book they would want to see performed as a stage show and recreated the most important moment to perform to the class. 'A Literary Bake' was also organised and inspiration was taken from the amazing cookbook 'Scone with the wind'. Recipes were shared to inspire edible versions of well-loved works including 'Wuthering Bites', 'The pie who loved me' and a 'Midsummer Pudding's Dream'. A sponsored ‘Readathon’ also started this week where all money goes to support the work of Read for Good. Finally students have taken the 'shelfies' quiz, to guess which member of staff’s reading shelf that is pictured and guess the book linked to the costume of staff.
