Surrey children sing in world’s largest school choir

Musical youngsters from Frogmore Junior School in Camberley showcased their talents at London’s O2 Arena when they sang as part of the world’s largest school choir.

A group of 20 Year 4, 5 and 6 children from the school, a member of the GLF multi-academy trust, joined over 8,000 others for the Young Voices 2023 concert which took place in front of an audience of thousands.

Frogmore’s headteacher, Emma Richardson, who accompanied the group said: “The choir and staff had an incredible day at the O2 and the 2023 Young Voices Concert.

“They were performing as part of the world’s largest school choir in a spectacular arena, experiencing new and known artists, and creating incredible memories.”

“It helps the children’s self-belief, self-motivation, confidence and ability to communicate as part of a team, which is invaluable.  Add to this the numerous health benefits of singing in rehearsals, including breathing exercises to focus the mind, and it is of high benefit being part of Young Voices.”

Songs performed by the choir included a medley of hits from The Trolls, Nile Rodgers’s ‘Disco Party’ and ‘Over the Hills’, along with ‘Sing from Your Heart’, which was specially written to celebrate Young Voices’ 25th anniversary last year.

This was the third time that Frogmore had taken part in Young Voices, which started in 1997 and broke its first Guinness World Record in 2001 when children from 159 schools sung in unison at the Manchester Evening News Arena.

This year more than 4,300 schools registered for the event with concerts taking place in Sheffield, Birmingham, London and Manchester.

“Every year is memorable and exciting,” said Miss Richardson. 

“Despite it being a long day and not arriving back to school until just before midnight, the concert was well worth it.  The children were again a real credit to the school, and we are very proud of their efforts.”
