St Michael’s RC Primary School, in Elswick, has been praised by inspectors for being a school which is “vibrant and inclusive” where pupils thrive. The Ofsted report on the primary school noted that pupils’ behaviour is “exemplary”, with children telling inspectors the school is like a family. The primary was rated as outstanding by Ofsted in the categories of behaviour and attitudes and personal development.
“Pupils’ individual differences are valued and celebrated at St Michael’s. Pupils told inspectors that school is like a family,” the report said. “Some pupils take on responsibilities to do ‘good works’ in the local community. “Others have roles which develop their leadership skills. Pupils talk with pride about being a school councillor, an eco-warrior, a hygiene hero or a well-being warrior. “Pupils understand the importance of attending school regularly. They enjoy coming to school and develop into confident and resilient learners.” The Ofsted inspection carried out in September 2021 rated the school, which is part of Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, as good overall. It found senior leaders have a “determination that pupils will excel”, with subject leaders also sharing that vision for the curriculum. “They identify the crucial knowledge they want pupils to learn in every subject,” the inspectors said. “Leaders set out clear, aspirational goals in curriculum plans. “Teachers are clear on the steps that pupils need to take to reach these end points.” The school was praised for having a highly inclusive environment, where pupils have positive opportunities to develop in many diverse aspects of life. Staff were also found to be “overwhelmingly positive” about working at the school, with high staff morale. Responding to the Ofsted report, one teacher at St Michael’s said: “The word ‘vibrant’ is a word that to me, defines St Michael’s in everything we do. “Our children have an eagerness to learn due to the enthusiasm and positivity of the staff. It is the positive culture of the school that drives everything we do. “Due to the support from senior leaders to develop staff in all areas, the pupils of St Michael’s are given the best chance to succeed and thrive in our school which is a joy to be part of each day.” Charlotte Chapman, head teacher of St Michael’s, said: “As a result of the dedication and hard work from staff, children and wider community, the school has embarked on a process of rapid school improvement which has resulted in significant progress in all areas of school life. “St Michael’s are proud members of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust. “As a result of working in partnership with Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust the school is able to share the expertise they have with teaching and learning, inclusion and creating highly effective school systems.” Mrs Chapman said the school is proud to welcome families from a wealth of different cultures and backgrounds, with the rich diversity of the school community greatly valued. Over 20 languages are spoken at the school and the school achieved the EAL gold mark in 2021 for achievements in meeting the needs of pupils learning English as an additional language. “St. Michael's strives to create a spiritual environment which is friendly, warm, caring and welcoming- a place where every child is given the best chance to fulfil their potential and achieve ambitious goals,” she added.
