A Newcastle primary school is ‘ambitious for all pupils’ and has retained its Good grading after a recent Ofsted inspection. St Charles’ Catholic Primary School, Gosforth, is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust and is described as a ‘vibrant and happy place to learn’ in a report published this week. “The school’s meticulous design of the curriculum ensures that pupils gain the knowledge and skills that they need in each subject area. Teachers know exactly what pupils need to learn and in what order,” the inspector noted.
The school has 238 pupils aged from three to 11-years-old on its roll and joined the Trust in April 2021. “Everyone connected to our school has a great deal of pride in it remaining a ‘Good’ school and the report reflects the hard work and dedication of staff, families, pupils and the wider community,” said headteacher Louise Nealings. Pupils, who behave very well, are keen to take on responsibilities within the school, noted the report. “Recently they designed posters for the car park, reminding parents and carers and visitors to drive safely for everyone’s protection. “Pupils benefit from a range of wider opportunities in school, including residential visits, clubs and trips to places of interest,” it adds. The children have a good and trusting relationship with staff and know their views and suggestions are important and staff will always listen. Pupils also show great respect to everyone in the school community. “Reading has a high priority in the curriculum. Most pupils learn to read fluently at the earliest possible stage. Highly skilled staff teach phonics from children’s first days in Reception class,” the report says, adding that pupils are also ‘enthusiastic mathematicians.’ Provision for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is also ambitious and pupils are identified at an early stage to receive good support and ‘join in with all the other enjoyable activities in school.’
