There were celebrations at Peterborough brewery Oakham Ales today as one of its most popular beers claimed victory at the SIBA Independent Beer Awards 2018.
Green Devil IPA took top honours with a gold in the Cask Strong Bitters and Pale Ales category, and took silver in the Overall Champion of the Cask Competition at the Society of Independent Brewers' national competition held in Liverpool last night. "Green Devil continues to be an outstanding beer in an ever-growing market and we were delighted with our success at the SIBA Independent Beer Awards because it's such a prestigious event," said managing director Adrian Posnett. "We're hugely proud of the continued popularity and success that our brews are enjoying, and that's a massive incentive to keep up the good work. These are very exciting times for Oakham Ales." Green Devil IPA qualified for the national event after taking top honours with a gold in the Cask Strong Bitters and Pale Ales section at the SIBA East Independent Beer Awards. The award-winning brew is described by Wetherspoon as a 'superb' beer and appears in 500ml bottles in 900 of the national chain's bottled craft beer shelves. Green Devil, at 6pc ABV, has previously taken national honours and won the coveted title of Champion Cask Ale for two years running at the International Brewing Awards. The award from the Society of Independent Brewers comes after Oakham unveiled a major rebranding of their brews for 2018 - based on consumer feedback. Through social media and special 'Meet the Brewer' events, Oakham conducted extensive market research into customer perception and appreciation of its beers, including popular favourites such as JHB, Citra and Scarlet Macaw. Using this information, the company redesigned packaging for a more contemporary look, and became the first brewery to incorporate tasting notes based on client feedback on its bottles, allowing drinkers to make an informed choice just by looking at the label. Details of the hops used in the production of each beer are also included, as research has shown this to be a significant deciding factor in drinkers' choice of brews, particularly amongst Oakham's younger demographic.
