Hillcroft Primary School launches recycling scheme

A Caterham school is aiming for a full set of green credentials by becoming a community recycling collection point for old writing materials.

In the week that more than 40 multi-national companies have announced their plans to reduce plastic waste, pupils at staff at Hillcroft Primary School have revealed their latest scheme to help the environment.

The school, a member of the GLF multi academy trust,  has joined forces with Terracycle to collect a range of materials which will be made into new items. Hillcroft is now part of a nationwide scheme and members of the Caterham community are welcome to join in - whether or not they have children at the school.

Terracycle is recruiting schools around the country to become collection points for all types of pens, highlighters, correction fluid, marker pens or correction tape. At Hillcroft these can be taken to the school and put into the special green recycling box which is just inside the main gates.

“We are committed to making our school as eco-friendly as we can with recycling at the heart of what we do and this new scheme is a great idea. We hope the community makes use of our special green bin so we can recycle as many writing materials as possible,” said deputy head teacher Louise Summer.

Hillcroft is heading for its Silver Eco Award status - an international awards programme which helps schools stay on a sustainable pathway. It is now registered as a BIC Community Champion through the writing instruments recycling programme.
