Students reacted with surprised delight when an RAF helicopter made an unexpected landing on their school playing field. Unbeknown to the youngsters at Newcastle's St John Vianney Catholic High School, headteacher Allyson Thorpe had arranged the surprise visit as an end-of-term treat, and the helicopter was piloted by the father of one of the pupils.
“The pilot is one of the Year 6 parents,” said Mrs Thorpe, “and he and I had spoken at length about how difficult the last few years have been for our children during Covid, and the number of lockdowns they have had to endure. The Year 6 children have been amazing and have shown such resilience and fortitude in the face of adversity.” The helicopter flew from RAF Aldergrove to St John Vianney’s, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Trust, on Friday July 22, the last day of term. Watched by the excited pupils, it alighted on the school field and stayed for an hour so that they could take photographs and chat to the pilot. “We could not be prouder of the children and the positive attitude to learning that they have shown this year,” continued Mrs Thorpe. “So, in light of that – and with one of the parents being an MOD pilot – we decided to give them a truly unique experience, as they have had a unique primary school journey. “The parent wanted to support our children, and the MOD wanted to demonstrate that our children are so valued. Without the support of the MOD, this would not have been possible. We joined together to make a truly unforgettable leavers’ afternoon."
