A group of Year 12 pupils from the Glyn School in Ewell have success in their sights after qualifying for the Great Britain national schools pistol shooting finals. The trio – James Miller, Emma O’Neill and Kieron Gall – secured their place at January’s tournament in Cardiff after finishing as runners up in the south of England seniors competition at Leweston School in Dorset, where they faced teams from top public schools such as Millfield and Sherborne.
Glyn and Millfield’s first team will now take on the top two teams from the north of England to decide the national champions at the start of next year. In addition to this, James and Emma have also qualified for the national schools individual finals. “Qualifying and getting through to the final on the first entry, of a Glyn team, in the National School pistol final is tremendous,” said Glyn’s extra curricular leader Tracy Pearson, who also runs the school’s Combined Cadet Force. The pupils from Glyn, a founder member of the Surrey-based GLF Schools multi-academy trust, all started shooting with the Epsom Scouts squad. From there, they have gone on to compete at junior international level both at home and abroad. "We are very proud that our pupils continue to excel with their sporting achievements,” Mrs Pearson added. “At Glyn we always actively encourage all activities making sure our students have the best extracurricular experience. We wish James, Emma and Kieran well as they represent Glyn in Cardiff.”
