Extremely great day for Lime Tree’s young readers

​Lime Tree School welcomed everyone from Gangsta Granny to the Big Friendly Giant as pupils enjoyed World Book Day. 

Children at the Merstham school dressed as their favourite storybook character, and staff organised themselves into differently-themed teams for the day, ranging from Alice in Wonderland to the Wizard of Oz to the Cat in the Hat. Some teachers acted out the stories they were dressed as, such as Cinderella and 5 Speckled Frogs.

Members of the teaching staff also provided the entertainment during Thursday afternoon’s assembly when they presented their own funny version of Room on the Broom, by Julia Donaldson.

Everyone enjoyed taking part in a variety of different activities to promote reading throughout the day! Some children created a ‘Weird Write’ where Lime Tree School became the centre of an adventure involving the world famous wizard Harry Potter.

“We had a fantastic assortment of costumes and everyone really got into the spirit of World Book Day. The children particularly enjoyed dressing-up as well known characters and we also raised £128 for Book Aid International, which was a great achievement,” said teacher Miss Bone.

There was also an extreme reading competition when children and staff were asked the most extreme places they had read a book. “We had some brilliant ideas,” said Miss Bone, who added that reading on a tractor, next to a beehive and a boat were all included. Every child at Lime Tree was presented with a book token to mark the event.

Lime Tree was opened by the GLF Schools multi-academy trust in 2013.
