Bedlington children’s 1,000km charity walk

Children at a primary school in Bedlington have walked almost 1,000km to raise over £500 for charity.
The pupils at St Bede’s, a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, have been taking part in The Big Lent Walk in aid of CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development).

Their 40 days of walking for the cause culminated in a walk around the playing field of fellow BBCET member and neighbour St Benet Biscop Academy.

Headteacher Therese Worrall commented: “On Thursday 30th March, we concluded our Lenten time in school with a big walk around St Benet Biscop Academy’s big field.

“The younger children were amazed at the field when they got onto it, but they managed the walk no problem within 20 minutes and the sun even came out for us.”

She continued: “Collectively, the children have smashed the 200m target, and we are hoping that it will exceed at least five times this.

“The children have been walking in all sorts of places – around the house, in the park, to and from school, in the woods, on the beach, with the dog, without the dog…

“One child has even clocked up kilometres in London, while another has challenged himself to get 10,000 steps a day in.

“Overwhelmingly, though, they have loved doing something for a good cause – challenging themselves even when they may not want to do it.”

And their efforts have certainly been worthwhile.

“The money pledged so far exceeds £500,” added Mrs Worrall, “so we are looking forward to being able to support those in need.”
