Staff and pupils at a Surrey school have officially been named ‘Angels’ for the help and support provided to young carers. Whyteleafe Primary School, a member of the multi-academy GLF Trust, has received the Angel Award from Surrey Young Carers for the work it has put into demonstrating the school is young carer friendly. “We are very proud to receive the Angel Award. We know how important it is to support our young carers and their families and strive to do our best for them. This award highlights the great work we do as a school and we’d like to thank Surrey Young Carers for all their training and support,” said Caroline Bishop, deputy head teacher and young carer lead.
The awards scheme was itself developed by young carers so their schools could be recognised for meeting eight standards set by Surrey’s Action for Carers. The organisation estimates there are two or three young carers in every classroom in the county and encourages schools to be supportive. Schools must have a carers’ champion, support group, training for staff and assemblies about young carers to help all pupils understand the issues they face and the support they may need. Heather Faulkner, young carer group leader and higher level teaching assistant said: "As the facilitator of the young carer groups, it's lovely to see children who have to go above and beyond at home have some fun and time for themselves. Surrey Young Carers have been extremely supportive, and I know they will continue to do so as and when it is needed. Receiving the Angel Award is a lovely recognition to show we are doing the very best for our children."
