Pupils from Springfield Primary School in Sunbury-on-Thames showed that the whole school is top of the class recently when they finished third out of 17 teams in a Spelthorne borough-wide general knowledge quiz. A team of four Year Four pupils – Joe, Jonny, Lydia and Archie - were selected by teachers based on their contribution in class, and put forward for the competition which covered history, geography, science and the arts.
“Some of the questions were really tough – even some of the teachers struggled with them – and they were expected to display knowledge on a wide variety of topics,” said Springfield’s assistant head teacher David Baker. “When the results came through we were absolutely delighted that they managed to achieve third place, winning bronze medals for their efforts.” The result represented a considerable improvement on last year’s performance by the team from Springfield, a member of the GLF Schools multi-academy trust. “A year ago Springfield finished eighth, so to leap up to third is a real achievement,” added Mr Baker. “The children worked incredibly hard, and events like this just go to show how learning and knowledge has so many uses. It’s not just about the classroom and the work that happens there, it can come in handy for pure pleasure too.”
