Four hundred budding artists will show their work to the public in an exhibition that draws inspiration from a host of different movements, from the Renaissance to Cubism and Impressionism. The students from Gaywood Primary School - ranging from Reception to Year 6 - will display their artistic talents at the Beyond the Line show, which takes place in the school hall on 6 and 7 October, and features works in charcoal, acrylic, textiles and oil pastels. Gaywood’s Year 6 teacher and head of art, Rachel Rossiter, said: “The exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the children’s art to a wider audience, and invite the local and wider community into our school.”
Headteacher Neil Mindham added: “Inspiration for the children’s artwork has been drawn from figures including Leonardo Da Vinci, Wassily Kandinsky, Andy Goldsworthy and Pablo Picasso, as well as more contemporary artists." The students worked both singly and in groups to create their pieces, and used a variety of different media, from print making in Reception and oil pastels in Year 1, to ‘natural materials sourced from the school field’ in Year 3 and watercolour in Year 5. Works on display will include mandala designs inspired by Goldsworthy sculptures, continuous line drawings in the style of Picasso, and life drawings influenced by Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite artists. “The theme that we chose was one of the seven elements of art – therefore the title of the exhibition is Beyond the Line,” continued Mr Mindham. “It also gave plenty of scope for all children across the school to contribute some artwork, regardless of age.” As well as parents and members of the public, the two-day exhibition will be attended by artists and organisers from Norfolk Open Studios, along with the Mayor, and governors and trustees from the West Norfolk Academies Trust, of which the school is a member. Entry is free, and Beyond the Line takes place on 6 and 7 October from 3.15-6.15pm in Gaywood’s School Hall.
