There was a decidedly Victorian twist when Sacred Heart Catholic High School celebrated World Book Day today. Staff at the Fenham school dressed up as their favourite literary heroes and heroines for the annual event, with students challenged to identify the Dickensian characters portrayed by the members of the English Department.
Students dressed for the occasion too, sporting book-themed accessories for the day, which took place this year on Thursday 7 March. There were also book-themed quizzes and contests to test all age groups, including the ‘Tasty Tales with a Twist’ 500-word short story competition and a task to match teachers with the opening lines of their favourite novels. To round off the event, classes across the school, which is part of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, were invited to ‘Drop Everything and Read’, when staff and students enjoyed the Roald Dahl short story ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’, accompanied by an Audible-style recording which featured colleagues and classmates. “World Book Day is so important to Sacred Heart,” said Deputy Headteacher Louisa Connolly. “It’s a chance for the whole school community to celebrate our love of reading across every group.”
