Costumes and competitions marked this year’s World Book Day at Meridian High School in New Addington. Staff and students alike arrived at school today (Thursday 7 March) dressed as their favourite literary characters, with prizes offered for the best costumes.
In the week running up to the annual charity event, the school, which is part of the GLF Schools Multi-Academies Trust, also held a ‘Masked Reader’ contest on social media, whereby students were challenged to identify seven members of staff who read excerpts from their favourite books with their voices disguised. On the day itself, further literary-themed competitions and activities took place during break and lunchtime, along with a special World Book Day assembly. “World Book Day is, and always has been, incredibly important here at Meridian High School,” said the school’s Assistant Headteacher, Amy Stimpson. “To us, promoting a love of reading is just as important at secondary school as it is at primary school. “World Book Day offers the opportunity for staff and students to share their favourite stories, characters and fictional works, as well as being a chance to dress up and partake in activities and competitions.”
