Cuddington Croft glowing with pride after golden sporting achievement

Pupils at Cuddington Croft School in Cheam have all been able to share that special winning feeling recently after the school was named among an elite group who have been recognised and honoured for their school sporting achievements.
Over 23,000 schools across the country were allowed to make an application to be part of the Sainsbury’s School Games scheme, with just 750 selected for the elite gold award – and Cuddington was in that group.

The award recognises achievements such as a school’s commitment to both intra and inter school competitions, the establishment of links with external local sports clubs, and also participation in extra-curricular clubs, amongst other categories. As a result of these efforts, in the past year, Cuddington pupils have gone on to play at representative level for nine different local sporting clubs, won six Borough events, and represented Epsom borough in county finals in three different sports.

“This is an amazing achievement for the whole school and one of which everyone should feel rightly proud,” said head teacher Scott Maclean. “It’s not just about focusing on the most active pupils, it’s about showing a commitment to sport across the board, and in a variety of ways, which also helps build the children’s pride in their school. A lot of people have played their part in making it happen, but the biggest contribution has come from Craig Miller, our head of PE and reading, who’s also a Year Three teacher. His enthusiasm has revolutionised sport at Cuddington, so this is a real reward for his efforts.”

Confirmation of the award was followed by the school’s annual sports week, which saw all children have a chance to take part in individual and inter-house competitions, as well as competitions for parents, and also the Year Six pupils taking on the staff. The teachers triumphed at football, but the pupils gained their revenge in the rounders match, with the 1-1 tie a suitably sporting end to a great week of athletic achievement on and off the pitch at Cuddington.
