A former shop worker and a single mum who both switched careers to take up care work in Norfolk have been rewarded for their outstanding performances in their new roles. The carers, at family-run care company Extra Hands, each received the firm’s coveted GEM Award for ‘going the extra mile’ in their work. Julie Hughes joined the Heacham branch of Extra Hands just over two years ago, having previously worked nights for a supermarket and briefly taking a job at a different care firm. The March GEM Awards attracted many nominations for team members at award-winning family run Extra Hands, but two worthy winners stood out for Going the Extra Mile. A school cook who hung up her apron to become a carer is celebrating two years in her role – and says she is enjoying every moment of it. Kerry Williams, who lives in North Walsham, joined the Broadland office of award-winning home care company Extra Hands in February 2021, when the pandemic saw her previous job become increasingly stressful and isolated. A former hairdresser has won an award for her exceptional work as a carer. Amanda Hathaway, who works at Norfolk home care provider Extra Hands, won the company’s GEM Award for ‘going the extra mile’ in caring and supporting service users. ‘Going the extra mile’ to beat some stiff competition, the winners of the January GEM Awards at a Norfolk home care company have been announced. Carer Tracey Sanchez took the honour at the Horsham St Faith office of Extra Hands, following a nomination from the family of a grateful service user. And in Heacham, the winner was Amanda Hathaway. A Norfolk carer once told colleagues she wasn’t returning - but two decades later she is celebrating an impressive milestone at an award-winning home care company. Nina Stephen will mark 20 years at family-run Extra Hands home care in January, and said: “After my first week in the role, which was with a different company, I really wasn’t staying! – and that was 23 years ago! Caring runs in the family for Rebecca Moore, who followed in her mother’s footsteps when she joined award winning Norfolk home care company Extra Hands two years ago. “My mum started working with the company and really liked it,” she explained. “I was due to start another job but got let down due to Covid, so I started working at Extra Hands instead. We both really enjoy it. Nina Tye joined award-winning home care company Extra Hands in November 2012. She previously worked at a variety of jobs including a dry cleaner, before finding her way to the company’s Broadland office. “After the dry cleaner’s, I was with a care company for about five years,” said Miss Tye. “After I left there, I went to work in a care home, but I didn’t like it. “I applied to Extra Hands online and got a phone call the next day. It happened to be my day off, so I came straight in, was offered the job, and have been here ever since!” |
