A wall of poppies has blossomed outside a Morpeth school to mark Remembrance Day in eye-catching style.
The children at St Robert’s Catholic First School each contributed a poppy to the display, which has been arranged on the front of the building to commemorate the occasion and will remain on show for the next two weeks. A picture is said to paint a thousand words, and that’s certainly the case at a Northumberland school, where pupils have gone to creative lengths to express their sense of community.
The realisation of a 19th century Frenchwoman’s dream to found a school for girls has been celebrated by the successors of its first pupils, 180 years later.
The students at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Fenham commemorated the landmark anniversary of the establishment of the Society of the Sacred Heart in England with a year-long calendar of events for 2022/23. Caring children saw the results of their charity fundraising close-up when an ambulance visited their school’s playground.
The pupils at St Columba’s in Wallsend had sponsored the vehicle, raising £275 for Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care, which provides free transport to and from hospital for cancer patients in the Newcastle area. A Newcastle primary school is ‘ambitious for all pupils’ and has retained its Good grading after a recent Ofsted inspection.
St Charles’ Catholic Primary School, Gosforth, is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust and is described as a ‘vibrant and happy place to learn’ in a report published this week. Poppy fields bloomed in Newcastle when a secondary school commemorated Remembrance Day in colourful style.
Staff and students at St Mary’s Catholic School transformed the building’s atrium into a ‘Field of Remembrance’, with the stage covered in hand-made poppy wreaths. Children at two Newcastle primary schools put their artistic talents to good use when they created designs for a community ambulance.
The pupils at St Lawrence’s and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary Schools in Byker were supporting Daft as a Brush, a charity which provides free community transport for cancer patients travelling to and from hospital in the Newcastle area. Budding young artists in North Shields showcased their talents in a special art exhibition based on the work of ‘The Pitmen Painters’.
The children at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Cullercoats took inspiration from the work of the Ashington Group, a small society of mine worker artists whose paintings became popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Known as the ‘Pitmen Painters’, they included Oliver Kilbourn, George Blessed, Jimmy Floyd, Harry Wilson, Len Robinson, John F Harrison and Fred Laidler. There was excitement all round when pupils in Walbottle saw their new play area.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Year 1 play facilities at St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School had received a £26,000 facelift, which saw extensive resurfacing work, along with the introduction of a new water wall and climbing equipment. |
