Young musicians from primary schools in Surrey and Croydon have played the stage at one of the world’s best-known London venues - the Royal Albert Hall. A total of 100 children from the GLF Schools multi-academy Trust had the chance to take part in the Music for Youth Proms, and to work with a former student who is now a composer and presenter Jack Pepper.
The whole event came about with help from the GLF Schools Foundation, and Jack has previously collaborated with the group in staging his musical Gulls & Buoys during the summer. Children from three primary schools, The Vale, Epsom; Cordwalles, Camberley and Chestnut Park, Croydon, took part in the evening with the theme #ThankYourMusicTeacher. “I was keen to work with the Foundation again and give the children a whole new stage. They did themselves, their schools and the Trust proud, taking the Royal Albert Hall by storm, helping premiere songs from another new stage musical, duet,” said Jack, a former student at the Trust’s Glyn School, Ewell. “I am beyond proud,” he added. Many of the children involved had not been to London, travelled on the underground or seen the Royal Albert Hall and they were more than excited to take part. “Providing our students with the opportunity to perform on the prestigious sate is precisely why the Foundation was developed. Offering exposure to such aspirational activities is at the heart of what we aim to achieve for all our students,” said Head of GLF Schools’ Foundation Jak Martin. The Foundation helps ensure all of the 17,000 GLF students have the same experiences, regardless of their circumstances. Funding is directed via three areas: projects, programmes and people awards.
