There was a twist when Cuddington Croft Primary School celebrated World Book Day today. Children of all ages at our school, which is part of the GLF Schools Multi-Academy Trust, donned fancy dress with a difference – each came to school representing a word, ready to take part in our Vocabulary Parade. “This has been really successful over the last couple of years and allows the children to be really creative and think outside of the box,” explained Rebecca Davies, who is Reading Lead at our school. “We invited children from Nursery through to Year 6 to take part in the vocabulary fancy dress, as well as, of course, our staff members.”
Other book-centred activities included ‘Stop, Drop and Read’, where everyone in class stopped what they were doing for five-minute reading breaks, and a ‘Teacher Swap’, where staff members visited a different class to share a selection of books. The children also worked on their own stories, with creative endeavours including origami booklets and comic strips, while older year groups enjoyed a virtual visit from author Lowie Stowell. The annual event was followed by the Scholastic Book Fair, which enabled the children to use their World Book Day £1 book tokens to purchase new books. “We love World Book Day at Cuddington, and the opportunity that it provides to celebrate our love for reading,” added Miss Davies. “It brings a lovely community feeling, as we admire the costumes, stories and writing of everybody around us.”
