Rock climbing, archery, orienteering, high ropes and even ‘flying’ were on the agenda when children from Wheatfield Primary School enjoyed a three-day stay at Oakwood Climbing Centre in Wokingham. The Year 5 class members were accompanied on the trip by Year 4 teacher Lauren Beare, Year 5 teacher Catherine Bond, and staff members Susan Griffin and Nathalie Woodham.
“The class of 30 children spent two nights and three days completing a range of activities that helped to develop team-building skills, resilience and bravery,” said Mrs Beare. “They stayed in rooms with their friends and had opportunities to share breakfast, lunch and dinner together. In the evenings, they took part in some team games and had a movie night.” “Some of the biggest highlights for the children were challenging themselves, especially with their fear of heights, and being able to try new things,” she continued. “Their favourite activity was the ‘Flying Kiwi’, which involved each child being attached to a harness and rope whilst their friends worked together to pull them into the air like a bird.” The trip has become a regular on the calendar for Wheatfield Primary, a member of GLF Schools, following last year’s Oakwood residential. “Last year the Year 5 class also visited Oakwood Climbing Centre and had a great time, as the staff were friendly, helpful, and encouraged all children to participate,” added Mrs Beare. “The children benefited from this visit, because they had an opportunity to try new things, build their confidence in a range of different areas, and spend time with children in their class that they might not necessarily play with. “We saw every child flourish whilst we were there, and witnessed how encouraged and kind they were to each other.”
