Taste of Spain, France, Italy and China for Newcastle pupils

There was an international flavour to proceedings when Newcastle pupils took part in a Languages and Food Day – complete with a ‘trip to France’, an introduction to Spanish, and the chance to taste a range of cuisine from around the globe.

The 29 Year 5 children from Our Lady and St Anne’s Catholic Primary School travelled to Sacred Heart High School for the event, which began with a ‘French trip’ where they practised the language and learnt about the country’s culture.

This was followed by the opportunity to sample traditional dishes from Spain, France, China and Italy.

“The second session was tasting food from different countries,” said Year 5 teacher Brooke Tofield, who accompanied the class along with Teaching Assistant Nessa Khanom.

“The children really enjoyed this and most of them got to try something new.”

It was then off to Spain for the afternoon, where the pupils were introduced to a new language.

“In the afternoon, Year 5 had a Spanish lesson where they created their own Spanish crazy menu,” continued Miss Tofield. “This was great, as the children learn French at our school, so they were exposed to a new language.”

The day ended with more culinary treats – this time made by the children themselves.

“The final session was a cooking lesson,” explained Ms Tofield. “The children made cheese and ham toasties in the oven and ate them. The children enjoyed this because it was a new experience in a food technology classroom.”

“Trips like these are very important,” she added. “It is an amazing opportunity for the children to experience different languages and cultures.”

Both Our Lady and St Anne’s and Sacred Heart High School are members of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.
