![]() There were celebrations all round at St Mary’s Catholic School in Newcastle today when students received some of the best exam results in the region. The Year 11 Class of 2023 enjoyed success across all subjects in their GCSE and vocational qualifications, with 80 per cent of students achieving at least a grade 4 in both English and Maths, 61 per cent achieving at least a grade 5 in both, and 27 per cent achieving the top grades of 7 or above in those subjects. Almost 40 per cent of grades at the school were 7 or higher, with over 80 per cent of grades 4 or above.
“We are delighted with their amazing results, which are testament to the high quality of the teaching at St Mary’s and to the dedication, commitment, and sheer hard work of our students,” said Headteacher Emma Patterson. “We expect these results to continue to be amongst the highest in the region for raw attainment and significantly higher than the national average. Students have made excellent progress at St Mary’s and achieved fantastic exam results.” Among the high achievers was Rosalind, who will continue her studies at the school, a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust. “I am so happy with my results,” she said. “All my hard work has paid off. My teachers have been really supportive, and I am looking forward to starting my A Levels in September.” Others celebrating their success included Joe and Jerusalem. “I am delighted with my results, as I have done well enough to get my place on an apprenticeship course, studying to be an electrician,” said Joe. “I have made some great memories at St Mary’s. Thank you to my family and teachers who helped me to be successful.” “I am really ecstatic with my grades,” agreed Jerusalem. “I got what I needed for sixth form, and I could not believe it when I opened the envelope. I could not have done it without everyone’s support.” Miss Patterson added: “We are very proud of our wonderful students for their tremendous GCSE results. They have demonstrated exceptional commitment and hard work throughout their studies and fully deserve these outstanding results. “Our GCSE results continue to be significantly above national standards in all areas. Students have worked very hard, with a determined approach, and have been richly rewarded for their efforts. We could not be prouder of our students. “Many thanks also to our superb teaching and support staff for supporting our students so well and embedding such high-quality teaching and learning at St Mary’s.”
