St Alban’s wins Newcastle City Championship

Young footballers have been celebrating after winning the Under Nines Newcastle City Championship.
 
The boys’ under-nine team from St Alban’s Catholic Primary School triumphed in the final at Walker Riverside Academy, beating Knop Law Primary 2-0 to take the trophy.

St Alban’s coach, Garry Marshall, said: “It was an extremely close game with great play from both teams, but the difference was two breakaway goals that were scored by Joe Belshaw and Zachary Askell.”
 
The team had been top of their group league during the annual competition, and had faced Byker Primary in the semi-finals, where St Alban’s had won on penalties.
 
It was also third time lucky for the school, a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.
 
“St Alban’s are really proud of the under nines’ achievement, after losing in the last two years in the final,” continued Mr Marshall. “It has been over ten years since the last time we won this competition.”
 
As well as taking home the trophy, the St Alban’s players each received a medal commemorating their win.
 
“The players were ecstatic,” said Mr Marshall. “Their achievement was celebrated in the school assembly, as well as posted on the school’s website and Facebook page.”
 
He added: “St Alban’s take an active part in all sporting competitions, as it is an important part of the children’s growth and development.”
