Young eco warriors in Ashington have been doing their bit for the environment by planting 165 trees and over 100 daffodil bulbs in the grounds of their school. The 12-strong Eco Committee at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary includes pupils from Years 2 to 6 at the school, which is part of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust. “I have worked at St Aidan’s for the last year and have formed the Eco Committee,” explained Year 3 teacher Julie Poynton, who led the project. “In my previous school I took this on board, and when I came here and realised how much space we have outdoors, I asked if I could be responsible for this subject here.
“I am hoping by being part of this group that the children can be more aware of our outdoor environment, in knowing how we can care for it, and recognise how we, by our actions, can help in the battle against climate change.” The 165 trees were ordered through the Woodland Trust and Northumberland County Council and comprised a diverse mix of hazel, rowan, hawthorn, dogwood, crab apple, wild cherry, elder, and silver birch. Assisted by the GMS staff who maintain the school’s grounds, the Eco Committee children spent a day planting the saplings, along with a host of daffodil bulbs. “The trees have been planted to surround our area that we are developing as a meadow to attract pollinators,” continued Ms Poynton. “We have seeded the meadow and will put down seed again in spring to ensure we have success in growing the right mix of flowers. “On the same day, we planted over 100 daffodil bulbs at the front of the school, which will hopefully give us a beautiful display in spring every year.” “The children are very keen and love being outdoors,” she added. “I myself feel it is important to share these opportunities to be outdoors, and encourage them to be responsible for our school grounds, and especially to know that they are able to contribute to our world through their actions.”
