Budding scientists showcased their skills when Salfords Primary School in Redhill held its annual Science Fair. Forty-one children from Reception to Year 6 took part in the event at the school, a member of the GLF Schools Multi-Academies Trust.
“Our Science Fair allows the children to research an area of science they find particularly intriguing or fascinating and produce a project to show off their findings,” said Claire Regnard, Headteacher at Salfords. “There were many practical experiments, involving glitter, tomato ketchup, Skittles and food colouring, to name a few.” Other projects among the 28 exhibits included a lemon and hot potato conducting electricity, measurements of reactions related to age, and a hamster exploring a range of different mazes. “We were particularly pleased with the range of science learning shared,” continued Mrs Regnard. “There were clear write ups, videos and conclusions, with many children showing they are able to evaluate their work and think about next time.” Parents and carers were invited to view the pupils’ exhibits, with one commenting: “It is so lovely to see science come alive through the children’s eyes – the projects are stunning.” The standard of entries was high, and all the children who participated were commended for their efforts and given a certificate for taking part, while the winners received a trophy. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their self-motivation, resilience, independence and reflection,” added Mrs Regnard. “We look forward to next year.”
