Young campaigners from Merstham Park School in Redhill felt so passionately about the situation in Gaza that they travelled to London to lobby Parliament for a ceasefire. The four students were accompanied by the Head of Year 10, Haley Scholz, on the trip, which saw them gain an audience with Members of Parliament.
“It was a privilege as young people to be able to go to Parliament and tell MPs our opinions about what is happening in Gaza,” said one of the students, who is in Year 8 at Merstham Park, which is part of the GLF Schools Multi-Academy Trust. “I enjoyed being able to voice my opinion. “There are children of all ages dying and living in conditions unbearable for privileged people like us. They don’t deserve it.” Her classmate, also in Year 8, added: “We went to Parliament and spoke to MPs. It was good to talk to them, to tell them our opinion. The MPs were nice to talk to.” Their Year 10 fellow students agreed, with one saying: “The situation in Gaza is horrifying. It’s disgusting to see the lack of humanity this country and the world have towards these innocent people. It’s appalling and atrocious, and I was extremely grateful for the opportunity to speak up. “Visiting Parliament gave me the opportunity to talk to MPs, express my views, and listen to speeches from other people who felt the same way I did. I even got interviewed at the end of the day.”
