Pupils’ Italian adventure

It was buon viaggio for children at Our Lady & St Anne’s Catholic Primary School when they headed to Rome for a four-day trip, which included spending time at an Italian school.

Twenty-seven Year 6 pupils travelled to Italy’s capital accompanied by Headteacher Sam Henzell and five other teachers from the school, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.

​The party stayed in the centre of the historic city, near The Colosseum, which they visited along with other famous Roman sites, such as The Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and La Colonna della Immacolata Concezione (the Blessed Virgin Mary).

Part of the trip saw the children meet with their Italian counterparts at San Pio X Primary School, where they had the opportunity to experience a different culture and were also able to practise their Italian skills.

“The children met Italian children and saw first-hand what school life is like in another country,” said Mrs Henzell. “Before the visit, we were lucky to work with a Modern Foreign Languages teacher from St Cuthbert’s High School who taught the class some Italian that they were able to put into play while there.”

The group also attended Mass at the English College, and went to The Vatican for the Papal Audience with Pope Francis before visiting St Peter’s Basilica.
