A Personal Assistant who switched career path to work as a carer is celebrating a year in her new role with a Norfolk company, and feels she has found her niche. Georgia Clasper joined family-owned care provider Extra Hands in June 2023, having previously worked as a PA and a school lunchtime supervisor, as well as a higher first aider.
“I wanted a change, and I wanted to achieve more for myself,” she said. “I wanted a bit of a challenge, and I wanted to see where it would lead me.” She was inspired to make the leap by a family member already working in the care industry. “My mum’s aunt started from her mid or late-30s, and although she wasn’t the youngest on the training, she worked her way up and is now a nurse,” she continued. “It’s only been a year, but I’m in the process of thinking about doing a diploma. I like the medical side of things, but have to go through the diploma first.” Miss Clasper, who is attached to the company’s Broadland office in Horsham St Faith, is relishing the variety and challenge of her new position. “It’s been challenging at times, but it’s rewarding for sure,” she added. “I enjoy it when I meet new people and get to know them. You’re there to help them, but they’ve taught me a lot too. I’ve learnt stuff from them. “I have a large variety of people that I see, but I do have a handful I see on a regular visit, because they’ve chosen to have me. I’m told they ask for me, which is really nice. “Every day is different and I like that you don’t get stuck in a routine – it makes it more enjoyable.” The 25-year-old from Heartsease is also making a positive impression on the service users, including one with dementia. “When I work with people with dementia, they don’t always remember you, but one time when I sat with someone in the evening that I usually see each day in the morning, she started talking to me about me,” she explained. “She remembered me from my tattoos – I have a butterfly and a bee and some numbers – and she was saying, ‘I have a lady in the morning with lovely tattoos just like yours.’ I thought that was quite sweet, and it made my day that she’d remembered me. “I’d say to anyone thinking about care work, I think they should make the change. It’s a breath of fresh air to make a difference. “It’s always fast paced with plenty to do, and when people’s faces light up because they’re pleased to see you, it's so rewarding.” Extra Hands provide bespoke, home-care packages across Norfolk and also have an office in Heacham.
