A Norfolk carer who juggles work with looking after two young children is celebrating five years with a family run care home company. Helaina Clapp works mainly during Friday evening and over the weekend, and is also studying for a qualification to help her further in her chosen career.
“I did work in a nursing home, but working with Extra Hands means I get to meet different people in different places and it’s really nice,” she said. With a three-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son, Helaina works around her family timetable but is hoping to increase her hours later in the year. Working towards her Level 3 in Health and Social Care, Helaina, 26, studies for several hours a week to ensure all her units are completed. Extra Hands has arranged for her qualification working with an external provider. “It’s been difficult, I won’t lie, and I have just received my units for the next round, and the workbook is huge,” she said. “I have passed my modules so far, and I will have to finish the next set, have some verbal questions and then observations when I am with people in order to pass. I am hoping that once I have done it I can work more hours as I’ll have a bit more time,” she said. Helaina, of Costessey, has lived in and around Norwich for all her life and is a former student of Sprowston High School. She works out of Extra Hands' Broadland office at Horsham St Faith. During the early part of the pandemic she was pregnant and also had to shield her young son as he has asthma. “I started to come back to work in the July, and things were still quite scary then,” she said. Meeting a variety of people and working in their homes means Helaina has the chance to spend time getting to know them as individuals. “You hear some great stories from them,” she said, adding that some days she would be the only person a service user might see.
