Budding entrepreneurs at a Lynn school were left with a good taste in their mouths as they celebrated the end of term in juicy fashion. The Year 7 students at Springwood High School marked the close of the academic year with Smoothie Day, where they planned, created, and marketed their own healthy drinks.
“Students have a couple of weeks prior to the Smoothie Day, where they learn about data collection and presentation, ratio of ingredients, and nets in their maths lessons,” said Emily Bunting, Assistant Head of Year 7 at the school, which is part of the West Norfolk Academies Trust. “Then, on the day, they work in teams, where they have to create a smoothie, packaging, and a pitch. The winner of each form is then invited to present to the whole year group in the afternoon for an overall winner.” The Dragons’ Den-style presentations required the smoothie makers to explain their choice of ingredients, as well as submit their product for a taste test to a judging panel which included presenter Simon Rowe from Radio West Norfolk. “The big presentation requires them to talk through their pitch and justify why they’ve chosen those ingredients for their smoothie,” continued Ms Bunting. “Judges also taste the smoothies on stage. “Simon Rowe was our guest judge and said this year was the best-tasting smoothies he’d ever had. “Students went above and beyond this year, dressing up as bananas, writing songs, and performing songs on stage, as well as running through the crowd and dancing – it was a fantastic day.”
