World Book Day became World Book Week at Warren Mead Infant and Junior Partnership in Banstead.
Taking as their theme ‘Heroes versus Villains’, children from every age group across the two schools took part in a week-long celebration of all things literary in the run up to the annual charity event, which took place this year on Thursday 7 March.

“At Warren Mead, our commitment to nurturing a love for reading transcended beyond just a day,” said Claire Raney, Year 5 teacher and Reading Lead at Warren Mead, which is part of the GLF Schools Multi-Academies Trust.

“This annual event embodied our belief that reading is the cornerstone of education,” she continued. “This year, our theme ‘Heroes Versus Villains’ ignited the imagination of every student from Nursery to Year 6. Through this theme, students delved into the world of their chosen hero or villain, crafting captivating character descriptions that showcased their creativity.

“The excitement peaked as classes voted for the most outstanding character descriptions, with winners advancing to the school-wide competition, where they proudly presented their creations to the entire student body.”

Other book-themed activities to mark the occasion included extra trips to the library, along with visits from children’s authors Louie Stowell and Tina Talbot.

There was also a fancy dress competition in which staff and pupils alike dressed as their chosen fictional characters, while drama sessions enabled the re-enactment of scenes from favourite stories.

The week was brought to a close with a listening session where Warren Mead staff read from a book that had been chosen by pupil vote.

“Reading outside under the bright sun or in a cosy nook, our children found joy in every page turned, every adventure embarked upon, and every bookmark carefully placed,” added Mrs Raney.

“This immersive, week-long celebration not only instilled a passion for reading but also reinforced our commitment to promoting reading for pleasure throughout the school community.”
