There were plenty of good reasons to celebrate at St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School, Newcastle, when this year’s GCSE results were revealed. The Year 11 boys celebrated with pride when they opened their envelopes. With more than 21per cent of all grades awarded at 7 or above, the results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of pupils and staff as well as the unwavering support of the boys’ families.
Among those celebrating, Tom W had more reason than most as he achieved an outstanding ten top Grade 9s and one 8, in Mandarin. He will be staying at St Cuthbert’s, a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, to study his A levels in maths, physics, further maths and chemistry. “I definitely want to go to university and maybe do something like engineering, or astrophysics,” he said. With both parents lecturers at university, he has a better insight than most into life in higher education and said St Cuthbert’s had been very supportive of his studies. “They let me take further maths as an extra GCSE because I want to do it at A level which was helpful,” he said. But the stage beckons for student Alfie J who had great results and is off to Newcastle College to take part in a musical theatre programme. He has been acting and singing since he was a small child and joined his peers on stage at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre for a performance to showcase young talent. “He’s always done it, since the age of two and the school has been very supportive of him,” said his proud mum. Another student celebrating success is Harry T who achieved nine Grade 9s and two Grade 8s. He is also joining the sixth form at St Cuthbert’s and will be studying A levels in maths, further maths, physics and chemistry. “I think it all went very well,” he said, adding that he had worked hard for his exams. “I was really relieved when I saw them - I’m really pleased,” he said. Headmaster Dan Murray said: “I am incredibly proud of, and delighted by, the achievements of our pupils. We should never forget that this cohort’s early education at St Cuthbert’s was disrupted by the COVID pandemic. The boys have shown resilience and determination. “These results reflect their commitment to their studies and the unwavering support they received from our dedicated staff. We are pleased that they have achieved the results that will open doors to exciting futures, whether that be continuing their education in our Sixth Form or embarking on appropriate college courses or apprenticeships.” said Mr Dan Murray, Headmaster. The team at St Cuthbert's is confident that these results will inspire future generations of pupils to strive for excellence and live out the school’s vision of ‘forming great men.'
