Fond farewell for headteacher of nine years

The start of a new term at a Walker primary school will be a bit different this year as its head teacher retired at the start of the summer holiday.

Martin Smith said farewell to St Alban’s Catholic Primary School, a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, after leading it since 2015 and said he had ‘enjoyed nine happy years’ in his role.

“It is hard to believe that some of the children in Year 3 and all the children in the classes below were not even born when I took up my post!

“We have had some great school trips, fantastic school productions, pantomime performances, wonderful Masses and Liturgies, unbelievable sporting success and not to mention the annual water fights. But also, we had to endure Covid 19, which involved home learning and school closures,” he said.

Mr Smith added that he had lots of plans for his retirement, including learning to play golf and the piano while tending his allotment and travelling more.

“There are lots of things in education and St Alban’s that have changed over the last nine years. But the love and kindness shown from the children and the support of the families has always been present,” he said.

“I will remember my time at St Alban’s fondly. Thanks to all the children and staff for helping make wonderful memories that will stay with me for a long time.”

Chief Executive of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust Anita Bath said: “Martin has been a very dedicated headteacher and served the community of St Alban’s with great care and commitment for many years. Although everyone at Bishop Bewick CET will miss him, we all wish Martin a wonderful and well-deserved retirement.”

The new Head of School will be former deputy Mrs Maria Duncan while Mrs Louise Nealings will join as Executive Head.
