David proves age is no barrier for caring career

Age is no barrier to working as a carer - as a Norfolk man has proven by winning a Rising Star award in his eighth decade.

David Tucker, 73, works for family-run home care company Extra Hands and has no intention of retiring anytime soon or taking things any easier. 

WIth a 30-year stint in retail and a further career with the Post Office now behind him, David says his current role is ‘incredibly rewarding.’

Living in Overstrand, he is based at the company’s Horsham St Faith office and generally he sees service users around the area he lives during his usual three-day week.

“I really enjoy what I do and it’s nice when you can help,” he said, adding that he had been delighted when told he was to receive an award after a year with the company.

The Rising Star Award is given to members of the team who have been at Extra Hands for a year or less and is a reflection of their work.

David has previously worked for Extra Hands briefly prior to re-joining last January and it’s a move he hasn’t regretted - despite not being able to play as much golf as he once was.

“I play golf, but not as much as I used to because I often do more days at work to help out so it doesn’t leave much time for outside interests,” he said.

He and his wife Eileen have two adult children.
