Everything bookish was on offer at a Croydon school which held a week of literature which included marking World Book Day. Literary visitors, dressing-up and visits to a local bookshop were all on the timetable for Chestnut Park Primary School, a member of the GLF Schools Multi-Academy Trust.
The school hosted illustrator Denzell Dankwah who is inspired by comic books and graphic novels. His debut book; The Power Keepers, is rooted in African mythology and aimed at young readers. He also illustrated Superheroes which was published by the Stormzy imprint Merky Books - it was the first children’s book it signed. The stories were written by Sophia Thakur and featured an introduction by Stormzy. Another visitor was author Daniella Blechner, whose books include 9 Days of Piper Snow, and she is also the founder of Conscious Dreams Publishing. Executive Headteacher Rachel Jacob said: "As a school we have been immersing ourselves in all roles in the writing, illustrating and sales of books. The children have enjoyed sharing their favourite books with one another, visiting Waterstones bookstore to spend their World Book Day vouchers and learning about becoming an illustrator. “As a school we are also encouraging children and their families to read for fun and in lots of different places. Thank you to our English Team for organising a great week and for all staff who also dressed up to inspire and motivate the children" She also thanked the school’s English team for organising the week and dressing-up to inspire the children.
