It wasn’t just the children who enjoyed the Coronation celebrations at Windmill Primary School – the whole community was invited to join in the fun. The run up to the day saw the children learning about the historical significance of the Coronation, culminating in the school’s Community Coronation Celebration today (Friday). In the morning, the children took part in a host of Coronation-themed activities from craft making and baking to recording commemorative videos, before enjoying a street-party-style picnic lunch, complete with bunting and flags.
In the afternoon, the festivities were opened up to the wider community, with families invited into school, a member of GLF Schools, to view the children’s Coronation creations and share refreshments – as well as create some memories with the help of the school’s specially made photo booth. “The photo booth was made and decorated by teachers and children at the school from packaging and materials we had been saving from around the school to repurpose to create the booth,” explained Headteacher Nicola Cotter. “It was set up after school for children to pose and take photos with their family members to remember the occasion.” The celebration concluded with the children performing the National Anthem, and the burial in the school grounds of the Coronation Commemoration Time Capsule, which contained items selected by the children to represent daily life in 2023, along with photos from the day, letters from the children, and examples of items that they had made.
