Aspiring athletes at Merstham Primary School were put through their paces when they enjoyed a visit from gold-winning British sprinter James Dasaolu on Friday 17 May. The retired track and field star became the second fastest Briton of all time in the 2013 British Championships and also won gold in the 100 metres at the 2014 European Athletics Championships, as well as representing his country twice in the Olympics.
The former champion led an assembly at Merstham, which is part of the GLF Schools Multi-Academy Trust, where he spoke about his sporting career and answered the children’s questions. “We were honoured to welcome James Dasaolu, esteemed Olympic athlete from Team GB, whose remarkable journey from Croydon to the pinnacle of international athletics served as an inspiration to our whole school community,” said Gavin Oulton, Headteacher at Merstham. “James shared anecdotes from his life and career, illustrating the perseverance and dedication that propelled him to become a European 100-metre gold medallist and represent Great Britain in two Olympic Games.” The children also had the chance to get physical when Mr Dasaolu, who retired from athletics in 2018 due to injury, took them through a fitness workout. “His visit provided valuable insights into the world of elite athletics, emphasising the importance of hard work and resilience in overcoming obstacles,” continued Mr Oulton. “James’s presence at our school not only showcased his impressive athletic achievements, but also ignited a flame of aspiration in our children, encouraging them to believe that, with dedication and passion, anything is possible.”
