There was a festive air at Warren Mead School when staff and pupils celebrated this year’s Children in Need appeal with an array of activities that brought together the whole school community in support of the cause. “The theme for this year was ‘Make Life Lighter’, encouraging students and staff alike to dress up in vibrant, fun-themed outfits, inspired by disco, rock ‘n’ roll, festival attire, or the beloved Pudsey Bear himself,” said Assistant Headteacher Jess Moylan.
Friday 15 November kicked off with an assembly led by Year 6 Teacher Craig Miller, which set the tone for the day with a ‘fizzy drinking challenge’ for the entire school, from Nursery through to Year 6. The fun continued in the classrooms, where the scheduled maths session was replaced with a Pudsey Maths Challenge, which featured problem-solving activities related to charitable giving, as well as discussions on the significance of helping those in need. Other activities across the day included a treasure hunt for the younger children, who also had the chance to learn the Piggle-Wiggle dance, and a disco session in the main hall of the school, which is a member of the GLF Schools Multi-Academy Trust. Lessons focused on the importance of mental health, in keeping with the ‘Make Life Lighter’ theme. “Pupils explored the importance of kindness, resilience, and emotional wellbeing through interactive activities and reflective discussions,” explained Mrs Moylan. “Across the school, students worked on group artwork and ‘how to draw Pudsey’ challenges, resulting in displays that brightened up the school corridors.” An after-school fun run rounded off the day, where staff, parents and members of the community all came together to show their support for Children in Need. “The event concluded with everyone gathering for one last cheerful assembly, reflecting on the day’s highlights and the importance of community efforts,” continued Mrs Moylan. “Warren Mead aimed to raise £500 this year for Children in Need, building on the success of previous years where amounts upwards of £400 had been collected,” she added. “Events like these are a cornerstone of the school’s commitment to fostering a sense of compassion, unity and active citizenship among pupils. The smiles, laughter, and camaraderie displayed throughout the day served as a testament to the school’s vibrant spirit and dedication to making a positive impact. “Overall, the Children in Need event was not just a day of fun and costumes – it was an embodiment of Warren Mead’s core values: Consideration, Pride, Aspiration, and Resilience.”
