High expectations for pupils who are thriving have helped a Berkshire school retain its Good school status from Ofsted. “The school’s values of ‘being the best you can be, being kind and making the right choices’ are lived up to by pupils and staff,” says the report for Wheatfield Primary School, Winnersh. “Leaders have rightly made learning to read a priority. Children start their journey in learning to read as soon as they join the reception class where they begin listening carefully to sounds that make up words,” the report says.
The school, a member of GLF Schools Multi-Academy Trust, has 211 pupils aged from four to 11 and parents say their children thrive at Wheatfield Primary, where they feel safe and everyone is treated equally. "We are really proud of the report and so pleased that the staff and students have been recognised in the report for the way in which they treat each other with respect and that their differences are celebrated," said Tamara Brown, Head of School. The report also highlighted the fact older pupils are proud to take on leadership roles, including reading champions and anti-bullying ambassadors. “They make a positive contribution to important school matters. Staff ensure that pupils’ personal development, talents and interests are nurtured well,” it says. There is also praise for the support and guidance for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Their needs are accurately identified and staff deliver assistance and learning activities. “From the early years onwards, pupils approach their learning with enthusiasm and curiosity. Children try their very best and are proud of what they achieve. The early years curriculum appropriately reflects the way young children learn. It is effective in laying strong foundations for children to flourish,” says the inspector. Leaders and teachers inspire children to enjoy reading and texts are carefully chosen for each year group to ‘ignite a passion and love for reading.’
