Students from Aureus School had the opportunity to display their talents to the community when they staged an evening of entertainment at the Cornerstone Art Centre in Didcot. Budding dancers, actors, musicians and artists came together to participate in the second annual Aureus School Creative and Expressive Arts Showcase. Among the many highlights of the evening was the Drama Club’s extract from Willy Russell’s iconic musical, Blood Brothers, along with performances from the GCSE Dance cohort, solo singers and musicians, and an exhibition from the school’s artists.
Over 100 students, across all year groups, took to the stage, including 80 dancers who performed street dance and pieces taken from works such as Christopher Bruce’s Swansong. Dance solos were given by Madeline Grisbroke, Olivia Szymczak, Mia Notarbartolo and Annie May McGibbon, all in Year 11, who performed to musical classics such as ‘All that Jazz’ from Chicago. Other musical performances were provided by four singers from Years 8 and 10, three guitarists, a clarinettist and a pianist from Year 11, and a saxophonist from Year 7. The 200 audience members at the sold-out event before the Easter break were also able to enjoy an exhibition from Aureus School’s GCSE art students, with 50 works of art on display, from watercolours and pencil drawings to pieces in acrylic and ink. Amy King, Head of Creative and Expressive Arts at Aureus, which is a member of the GLF Schools multi-academy trust, commented: “I am really impressed with the level of courage, ambition and resilience each student has shown from this cast of over 100 students. As an Arts faculty, we will continue to empower them to achieve high expectations in these subjects.” She continued: “At Aureus, we strongly believe these four subjects are vital to help our students succeed not only during their time at Aureus, but also as they develop into young adults.”
