The worlds of stage and screen came together in one musical extravaganza when Smithdon High School held its first Easter concert.

Young performers at school, which is a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, starred in ‘A Night of Cinema and Stage: Celebrating the Arts’, with all year groups taking part.

The evening’s entertainment featured a wide range of musical offerings from ensembles to soloists, as well as drama, dance, art and even the school’s cooking club.

Teacher of Music and event organiser, Andrea Miller, explained: “All of the songs in the performance were songs from movies, television or musicals, including the theme song of Netflix’s Wednesday, ‘The Eye of the Tiger’, and a Disney Medley.

“In addition to this, we were celebrating drama, dance, art and even our seasonal cooking club, with students from all age groups participating in the performance from a variety of ensembles and private lessons, as well as the dance club, cooking club and art club.”

Among songs and scenes from popular theatre, film, television and dance through the ages, highlights of the show on Wednesday 29 March included a preview of the school’s next musical, Frozen Junior, while refreshments were provided by Smithdon’s food department, headed by Rebecca Dibble.

Other staff involved in the event were trainee teacher Sophie Warwick, who ran the choir; drama and dance teachers Kayleigh Brown, Vicky Proctor and Sinead Vickers; and Laura Ruskin and Sian Wheeler from the Art Department.

“Music holds an important place within the Smithdon community,” continued Miss Miller. “We hold musical events regularly and have music-related clubs running daily at school.

“We have seen the power that music can have to change students’ lives and instil them with confidence and pride – with that in mind, we want to give every student the opportunity to participate in performances.”
