World Book Day at St St Charles’ Catholic Primary School held a day of activities to celebrate World Book Day, with pupils donning costumes and taking part in literary-themed quizzes and writing exercises. This year marks the 25th anniversary of World Book Day and the message for all children is ‘you are a reader’, with a focus on reaching children from disadvantaged backgrounds.'
The Gosforth school, which is part of Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, also chose to explore the theme of developing a growth mindset. As well as dressing up in literary-themed costumes, pupils read and discussed different stories in which the characters face challenges or adversity which they have to overcome. The day of activities included a special assembly and quizzes in the school library led by reading champions. The children wrote book reviews, text summaries and character descriptions based on the books and also created artwork to go alongside their writing. Staff also participated in the fun, including recording ‘masked reader’ videos in which they read stories and children had to guess who was behind the disguise. World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading and it is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.
