The Mermaid has beaten more than 240 pubs in South Hertfordshire to a gold medal and become the area's branch pub of the year, having already scooped Cider Pub of the Year from CAMRA.
The popular pub serves a range of real ales alongside Oakham Ales' award-winning Citra and will receive its award from Les Middlewood, the South Herftfordshire chairman on Saturday, March 27 at 5pm. "We look forward to ensuring The Mermaid keeps up its reputation of serving a great range and quality of real ales and ciders in a friendly atmosphere, at the heart of the local community," said co-landlords Mark Powell and John Cusworth. "We are delighted that The Mermaid, which is a fantastic outlet for Oakham Ales, has been recognised by CAMRA for its work. We wish Mark and John many more successes in the years to come," said Adrian Posnett, managing director of the Peterborough-based brewery. The Mermaid goes through to the next stage of the National Pub of the Year competition which will include pubs from across the county. Citra was launched by Oakham Ales six years ago and sells more than a million pints a year - making it the company's best-selling brew.
