Would-be cosmonauts enjoyed an out-of-this-world experience when they got to spend time with a real-life spaceman and hear an insider’s account of space travel.
Former NASA astronaut Charles ‘Sam’ Gemar visited St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Alnwick as part of a three-day space-themed Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) programme, which was organised by the school’s Science Lead, Donna Newton, and provided by Peter Longstaff of Starlight Education – a parent at the school whose company delivers STEM workshops across the world.

Four aspiring young writers have been picked from thousands to go through to the semi-final of a national story writing competition.
Thirty Year 6 pupils at St Alban’s Catholic Primary School in Walker took part in the BBC 500 Words contest, which required them to write a story of no more than 500 words, with marks awarded for characterisation, plot, originality and enjoyment. Talented young mathematicians answered thousands of questions correctly to win first place for their school in a national maths competition – for the second year running.
Over 600 Key Stage 3 students aged 11 to 14 at St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy took part in the annual 10ticks Mental Maths Competition, which was sponsored by Liontrust and required entrants to answer as many questions as possible correctly over a two-week period. Tasty reads were on the menu at a school in Ashington when pupils were served up a literary feast in an initiative designed to promote a love of reading.
The Book Tasting was a new venture for St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School, where 28 Year 3 children from Maple Class took part in the innovative event. Young eco warriors in Ashington have been doing their bit for the environment by planting 165 trees and over 100 daffodil bulbs in the grounds of their school.
The 12-strong Eco Committee at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary includes pupils from Years 2 to 6 at the school, which is part of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust. A classroom topic was brought vividly to life for a group of schoolchildren from Walker, when they enjoyed a visit to the Great North Museum: Hancock.
The Year 4 pupils from St Alban's Catholic Primary School had been studying Ancient Egypt in class, and were able to gain some hands-on experience of the subject during their time at the museum. Parishioners were treated to Christmas lunch, complete with festive entertainment, when an Ashington school opened its doors to members of the community.
It was the third year that St Aidan’s Catholic Primary had hosted the event, with the help of the school’s ‘Mini Vinnies’ – a group of eight Year 5 pupils, led by the school’s Key Stage 1 Lead, Nichola Givens. Festive fundraisers at Marshland High School donned Christmas jumpers today in support of Save the Children.
Staff and students alike at the secondary school sported a wide range of colourful, themed knitwear to raise money for the charity’s annual appeal, which first began in 2012 and has since raised over £35 million for children in the UK and overseas. Strong and determined leadership at a Northumberland school has raised expectations for pupils who have ‘excellent manners’ and take pride in their work.
Significant improvements have been made at Ss Peter and Paul’s Catholic Primary Academy, Cramlington, which has been awarded outstanding for personal development, and an overall rating of Good following a recent Ofsted inspection. A host of activities took place outside the classroom when sixth formers at a Newcastle school enjoyed a ‘Day of Aspiration’.
